The Absence of War in Southeast Asia: The Role of ASEAN

The consequences of war are unbearable and avoidable. War adversely affects combatants and non-combatants alike, both physically and emotionally. Death, injury, sexual violence, malnutrition, illness, and disability are some of the most threatening physical consequences of war, while post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety are some of the emotional effects. Besides damage and loss, War can exacerbate the economy sustainability and development and also could spills over towards other sectors of life. Realizing its unavoidable effect, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN prefer to seek peaceful solutions towards their bickering or disputes between member states. The choice to deescalating their intramural disputes between member states seems effective since its formation there has been no war between member states. ASEAN has their own way to approach their disputes, the so-called ASEAN Way, that is noninterference in internal affairs of other states. It is in line with the ASEAN principles Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) which highlights mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations. The book reveals the way of the countries in Southeast Asia in avoiding the conflicts between member states. It is also systematically arranged in order to gain the simplicity in conveying the message. It is one of the most suggested references for strategic studies, political sciences, and international relations literacies.
